Manchester Ship Canal Excavations
It was the idea of Manchester manufacturer “Daniel Adamson” who invited representatives of several Lancashire towns, politicians, Manchester business men & two civil engineers Hamilton Fulton & Sir William Leader-Williams to a meeting in his home to discuss the plans. Both engineers were invited to submit plans & eventually Sir Edward William-Leader’s plans were selected. The work on the canal started in 1887 and was completed in November 1893. The new canal was opened to its first traffic on 1st January 1894.
