overview
SAR South African Railways
A South African Railways class 15F 4-8-2 heads a freight train including some ore hoppers crossing a bridge in the Carolus/Barradeel area Northern Cape - 23rd May 1968. It sports one of the steam operated chimney cowls, provided on certain members of this class, when operating over the Cape Midlands mainline. Upgrading and realignment of the route had introduced a number of new tunnels and smoke emission when passing through the lengthy Carlton Tunnel near Noupoort had caused problems for steam loco crews. When closed, the cowls redirected the exhaust down towards the track and clear of the footplate.
