overview
SAR South African Railways
Eastern Transvaal System Northern & Eastern Transvaal areas
A South African Railways GO class 4-8-2+2-8-4 Beyer-Garratt locomotive heads a freight train at Santa, on the heavily graded Belfast - Lydenburg - Steelpoort branch, in 1968. The heaviest traffic on this line consisted of chromium ore mined around Steelpoort, that needed to be lifted out of the Lowveld area to pass through Nederhorst, the highest point on the entire SAR network at 6875 feet above sea level.
